CEU Students taking courses at University of Vienna

APPLICATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA SOMMERSEMESTER 2024

General Information:

Students who are enrolled at a CEU Masters or Doctoral Program are eligible to attend single academic courses at the University of Vienna for credit or for audit free of charge at their current study level.

The application process for attending a course for credit or for audit is the same.

CEU students can enroll in courses taught in any language:

  • If the language of instruction of the course is English, no extra proof of language proficiency is needed.
  • If the language of instruction is German or other, a proof of language proficiency will be required.

(Please note that language courses managed by the University of Vienna Sprachzentrum are not part of this program!)

CEU students attending courses at the University of Vienna will be part of the University of Vienna Visiting Master or PhD program.

Please make sure the schedule of the course you are attending at University of Vienna doesn’t coincide with your CEU obligations. Attending a course at University of Vienna can’t be a reason for missing CEU classes, unless a special permission is given by your CEU Department. 

If you apply for more than 1 course (2 courses), they have to be offered at the same Faculty. The application is only possible for (different) courses at one Faculty.

ECTS Credits earned at University of Vienna can be transferred towards a CEU Degree according to the CEU Credit Transfer Policy. See: https://www.ceu.edu/sro/credit-transfer 

Due to the different Academic Calendars of CEU and University of Vienna, only CEU 2-year Master students currently in their first year, and CEU Doctoral students will have the possibility to have the credits recognised towards their CEU Degree Program. CEU 1-year Master students, CEU 2-year Master students currently in their second year, and Doctoral students who are about to graduate are eligible to attend courses at University of Vienna for audit or for credit, but won't be able to use the credits towards their CEU degree.

Wintersemester:

  • Application opens: August 1
  • Application closes: September 1
  • Semester starts: October 1
  • Last date of courses: January 31
  • Semester ends: February 28

Sommersemester:

  • Application opens: January 7
  • Application closes: January 31
  • Semester starts: March 1
  • Semester ends: June 30

Master's Students' Applications have to include:

  • University of Vienna Degree Programme and Title of course you would like to attend for credit or for audit
  • Your Motivation (200 words)
  • Endorsement from Head of Programme or Head of Department*
  • Passport/personal ID-card scan
  • Proof of enrolment at the CEU
  • Bachelor diploma certificate and transcript of records from the completed bachelor programme (English or German language)
  • Transcript of records from the current master programme (unofficial transcript from SITS suffices)*
  • Proof of knowledge of German (if the language of instruction of the course is German)

Doctoral Students' Applications have to include:

  • University of Vienna Doctoral Degree Programme and Title of course you would like to attend for credit or for audit
  • Your Motivation (200 words)
  • Endorsement from Supervisor, Head of Programme or Head of Department*
  • Passport/personal ID-card scan 
  • Proof of enrolment at the CEU
  • Bachelor diploma certificate and transcript of records from the completed bachelor programme (English or German language)
  • Master degree diploma certificate and transcript of records from the completed master programme (English or German language)
  • Transcript of records from the current Doctoral programme (unofficial transcript from SITS suffices)*
  • Proof of knowledge of German (if the language of instruction of the course is German)

Please note that many of the listed documents are required for the official registration in the University of Vienna system, enabling students to get access to course registration and to receive ECTS Credits. Exeptions can't be granted.

Austrian Student Union Payment - ÖH Fee:

According to Austrian Higher Education Regulations, Student Union Fee payments are obligatory at each Higher Education Institution in the country where a student has enrolment status as full-time, or visiting student. Despite paying the fee at CEU, the same fee must be paid at University of Vienna, when you enrol in courses for credit. Double payment however means that you will be eligible for reimbursement of the second fee payment from ÖH directly.
