Introduction to Political Science (Dep. of International Relations and Political Sciences)

Course outline- 6 ECTS

One of the aims of this course is to give students basic knowledge on the study of the political phenomena, as well as to inject critical thinking as participants in the political and social life. The course will be focused on the main principles and instruments that a student on this field must possess. This aims at getting students to learn political science terminology, basic concepts, theories and methods, as well as the use of different techniques for studying the political phenomena. Ultimately, students will be

able to apply these concepts in interactive debates, but also in practical group work. The topics of the course will be principle issues that are debated in the political science, beginning with the definition of politics and the many meanings it involves.

Research Methods (Dep. of International Relations and Political Sciences)

Course outline- 6 ECTS

This course is a general introduction to social research methods and will cover four broad topics: the foundations of social science, research design, data collection, and data analysis. In discussing each topic, we will also consider the ethical implications of social research. Social research is a craft, and like any other craft, it takes practice to do it well. Therefore, our approach will be hands-on right from the start. You will have opportunities to learn by doing in all aspects of the course—in class meetings, the computer lab, and out-of-class assignments.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Formulate good research questions and design appropriate research.
  2. Collect your own data using a variety of methods.
  3. Analyze both qualitative and quantitative data using computer-based skills. Critically evaluate your own research and that of other social scientists.

Political Sociology (Dep. of International Relations and Political Sciences)

Course outline- 6 ECTS

The course introduces students to some of the central problems of concern to sociologists working in the field of politics. It is focused on examining the nature of political power, the cultural dimension of politics, and the dynamics of political change. Special attention is given to the ways political power intersects with structures of class, gender and race. A unit on the politics of globalization will introduce students to the implications of US policies in an expanding political terrain. The goal for the course is to provide students with the tools necessary for critical analysis of, and active engagement in, Albania political life.

By the end of the semester students will have a better understanding of the political dynamics of everyday life than when their started. So what exactly is political sociology and what distinguishes it from other disciplines like Political Science? As a starting point we can describe political sociology as directing our attention toward “how politics both is shaped by and shapes other events in societies. Instead of treating the political arena as independent from other happenings in a society, [political sociology] treats that arena as intimately related to all social institutions”.

Local Governance (Dep. of International Relations and Political Sciences)

Course outline- 6 ECTS

This course aims to equip students with some of the basic concepts of operation and challenges of local government, focusing on key aspects of the reforms aimed to democratize and enhance the effectiveness of governance and consolidation of decentralization processes.

Local governance is a relatively new dimension that aims to bring government closer to the interests and needs of citizens. One such reform is undertaken also in post - communist era after the overthrow of the communist highly centralized systems.

The course will provide students with the basic concepts on elements of local government and offer the experience of local government in post-communist countries, especially the situation in Albania.

The course is organized into three parts that correspond to the objectives of the course:

a) Concepts and issues in the study of the state;

b) local government reforms in post - communist;

c) the status of local government in Albania.
